The journal PALEO was created in 1989 around the National Prehistory Museum by the Friends of the National Prehistory Museum and Archaeological Research Society (SAMRA) working in close collaboration with the DRAPA (Regional Management of Prehistoric Antiques of Aquitaine), with the support of researchers raised primarily from organisations set up in Aquitaine such as the Prehistory and Quaternary Period Geology Institute, the University of Bordeaux I Anthropology Library, the National Prehistory Centre of Périgueux and the Departmental Archaeology Service of Dordogne.
The immediate goals were to provide a publication medium specific to Palaeolithic prehistory. The success of the first editions, both nationally and beyond, encouraged the editors to collaborate with various authorities in order to conform to international publications. The journal is peer-reviewed, it has an editorial secretary office as well as an editorial board made up of twelve people including the Director of the National Prehistory Museum, the director of publication. This organisation defines the general publication policies of the journal. It examines articles and chooses members for the peer-review board whose specialties make them particularly capable of rereading the articles proposed for publication. PALEO is also equipped with a scientific committee bringing together French and foreign figures.
The Without geographical limits, the PALEO collection welcomes all contributions dealing with Palaeopopulations, human activity and behaviour, the physical and biological Paleoenvironment, chronology and digital dating, stratigraphy, geoarcheology, Palaeolithic art, Palaeoanthropology, tool making studies, experimental archeology, ethnoarcheology, site formation processes, methodology, conservation and preservation of all types of relics.
The PALEO collection is composed of various mediums: an annual bulletin comprised of original articles of national and international interest and supplement that do not appear on a regular basis (symposiums, dissertations, research monographs, etc.)
